Bailey Martinez of Cal State LA has been selected as the FloCollege/CCAA Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 5-11.

Martinez anchored the Golden Eagles’ backline as Cal State LA recorded a pair of shutouts in two home victories, extending its shutout streak to four consecutive matches. The sophomore from Corona, Calif., played all 180 minutes across the two matches, helping limit opponents to just 11 shots and five shots on goal. Martinez also contributed offensively, scoring one of the Golden Eagles’ three goals in Friday’s victory.

Cal State LA opened the weekend with a 3-0 win over Cal State East Bay on Oct. 9. Martinez scored in the victory as the Golden Eagles controlled the match defensively, limiting the Pioneers’ opportunities in front of goal.

She followed with another strong performance in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos. Martinez and the Golden Eagles’ defense kept the Cougars off the scoreboard to secure the team’s fourth consecutive clean sheet.

Cal State LA has recorded seven shutouts this season, tied for the third-most in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles have allowed just eight goals through 13 matches, averaging 0.62 goals against per game, and rank among the conference’s top defensive teams.
