Cal Poly Pomona defeats #1 Colorado Mines 2-0 to earn a spot in the national semifinals

[Box score]

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona is heading to the NCAA semifinals after earning a 2-0 win over previously undefeated and No. 1 nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines (Dec. 7).

Liberty Ortiz put the Broncos (20-1-2) in front with a header goal off a corner kick from Tara Oper in the 31st minute. CPP earned the corner kick after a box-to-box run by their center back, Bella Anderson. Oper lofted the corner higher than usual and it went over everyone to a wide open Ortiz on the far side of the goalie box. With both feet firmly on the ground, she directed a perfect header past the keeper for the go-ahead goal.

Mines (20-1-2) would get its chance at the equalizer in the final minute of the half when RMAC Player of the Year Reese McDermott received a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Bella Hara ensured the Orediggers would not be tied going into halftime as she stonewalled McDermott's subsequent attempt with a dive to her left.

Marisa Salazar would score a goal in the 63rd minute to extend the lead to 2-0. It was her third consecutive NCAA postseason game with a goal. Oper also assisted with this goal and has now assisted on four of the Broncos' five playoff goals.

Bella Hara made four saves to preserve the clean sheet for CPP. Allie Lundgren had three in the losing effort.

Cal Poly Pomona will now advance to the NCAA semifinals in Matthews, N.C. Its next game will be on Friday, Dec. 13.
