POMONA, Calif. - The CCAA will be represented in both semifinal matches after Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State earned five-set wins on Thursday.
#1 Cal Poly Pomona 3, #8 Simon Fraser 2
The top-seeded Cal Poly Pomona outlasted No. 8 seed Simon Fraser in five sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-25, and 15-11) to advance to the semifinal round of the 2024 NCAA Volleyball West Region.
Sarah Ybarra,
Samantha Campion, and
Caitie Mueller each registered double-doubles to lead the Broncos. Ybarra posted 17 kills and 22 digs to lead all student-athletes. Campion added her 15th double-double of the season with 16 kills and 18 digs. Mueller had 42 assists and 13 digs.
While she doesn't have double-figures in any category,
Helen McMullin played a crucial role in the win. The junior middle blocker posted eight kills and six blocks, including two of each in the critical fifth set to help CPP clinch the regional victory.
It was a bit of a struggle for the No. 1 seed at home as they had to overcome 42 of its own hitting and service errors to earn the win.
Simon Fraser jumped out to the early lead with a 25-20 in the first set. CPP also started slowly in the second set but turned it around to win sets 2 and 3. With the opportunity to close the match, CPP struggled in the fourth set, hitting only .147, as the Red Leafs hit .414 with 13 kills and just one error.
Things would change in the fifth set when the Broncos' defense took its game to the next level. It held SFU to only three kills in the decisive set while getting two blocks, including one by McMullin and Campion, to clinch the match.
Brooke Dexter and
Davida Hill paced Simon Fraser with 14 kills apiece. Each also posted a double-double with 13 and 15 digs, respectively. Nina Kovacevic led the team with seven blocks.
Cal Poly Pomona will face No. 4 seed Point Loma in the semifinals on Friday, Dec. 6 at 4 p.m.

#3 Chaminade 3, #6 Stanislaus State 0
Stanislaus State fell in straight sets to Chaminade (24-26, 25-27, and 11-25) in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.
While the match ended in three sets, the first two took extra points to decide. Unfortunately for Stan State, though, they both went to the Silverswords. The Warriors reached game-point first in both sets, but Chaminade made a late run to close out the set with a comeback win each time.
In the first, CUH scored the last four points of the set to win 26-24, and in the second, it scored four of the last five points to pull out the 27-25 win. The third was all Silverswords, as they also posted 14 kills to the Warriors' five.
Mahala Ka'apuni led all student-athletes with 12 kills and three aces.
Letizia Cammillucci added nine kills and 12 digs.
Grace Talpash led the team with 32 assists and three blocks.
Ellison Weaver's eight kills paced Stanislaus State.
Chaminade posted nine aces compared to two for Stan State.
This ends the 2024 season for Stanislaus State. Chaminade will advance to the semifinals, where it will face San Francisco State.
#2 San Francisco State 3, #7 Cal State LA 2
In an epic battle between two CCAA teams, San Francisco State came from behind in the fifth set to pull out the win and end the defending NCAA Champions, Cal State LA's season (25-16, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25, 16-14).
Both teams were evenly matched on the court, and in the stats, only a few well-timed runs earned the Gators their first NCAA Regional victory since at least the 1987 season.
Aidan Goodrich led No. 2 seed SF State with a .283 hitting percentage as she put down 15 kills with only two errors.
Tamiya Wilson had a season-best 20 digs to go along with 14 kills.
Izzy Issak added a double-double of her own with a team-best 18 kills and 14 digs.
Kimberly DeBoer also recorded a double-double with 46 assists and 15 digs.
Brianna DeBoer shattered her career-high with 36 digs. It was double her previous season's best and was the best dig performance in the CCAA to this point in the 2024 season.
Emily Elliott paced No. 7 seed Cal State LA with 25 kills and seven aces. It was her fourth consecutive match with over 20 kills. The Costa Mesa native completes her historic career as the conference's all-time kill leader and the only CCAA student-athlete to register over 2,000 in a career (2,011). She matched her season-best with 17 digs for her seventh double-double.
Samarah DaCoud added 12 kills and 19 digs. Jameson Sanders had 26 digs, and Haley Roundtree had eight kills.
After trading the first two sets, the third set was decided by SF State's 5-1 closing run. It trailed 23-21 before rattling off two points to tie the match. An attack error by
Tamiya Wilson would give Cal State LA game-point at 24-23, but she would quickly make up for the mistake. Wilson scored three consecutive kills and closed out the third set for the Gators (26-24).
The Golden Eagles broke up a 13-13 tie in the fourth set by taking seven of nine points to open a five-point lead at 20-15. The teams then traded points, and Cal State LA won 25-20 to push the match to the decisive fifth set.
A setting error would give SF State a 5-4 lead. Cal State LA immediately answered with a 6-0 run that included three kills by Elliott and an ace to open up a 10-5 lead and put all the momentum with the Golden Eagles.
Following a timeout by SF State,
Izzy Issak ended the run with a finish on an assist from
Kimberly DeBoer. Another kill by Elliott put LA back up five (11-6). It was then the Gators' turn to hit their run. They posted six straight points to go up 12-11, and eight of nine points to take a 14-12 lead.
Cal State LA had too much experience to go out without answering the Gators' charge.
Zuhal Cetin posted a kill, and Goodrich made only her second hitting error of the night to tie the match at 14-14. An attack error put SFSU ahead by one before Goodrich finished the match on a bump-set by
Brianna DeBoer.
SF State will advance to the 2024 NCAA West Regional semifinal round, where it will face No. 3 seed Chaminade on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
