Stanislaus State made program history as the No. 3 seeded Warriors upset No. 2 seed San Francisco State in four sets (25-21, 15-25, 25-23, and 25-18) to earn the program's first appearance in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament championship match (Nov. 22).
Ellison Weaver had 14 kills (.293 hitting%) and 14 digs to post her third double-double of her senior campaign.
Isabella Saucedo added 11 kills, and
Makenna Carillo chipped in nine. Gabby Rawson registered 17 digs, and Haley Burdo led the squad with 17 assists.
Things did not look good for Stan State out of the gate when SF State scored the first six points of the match, including four consecutive aces. But the Warriors righted the ship and came back to win the first set 25-21. They were down 16-10 before putting on a 7-1 run to knot the set at 17-17. After giving up one point on an error, before Stan State outscored the Gators 8-3 down the stretch to win the first set and build the team's confidence.
Stanislaus State had not taken a set off SF State in either match this year (0-6), so despite falling in the second set 25-15 and going down 8-3 in the third, the Warriors were prepared. They battled back to trail by just two at 17-15, before putting together a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the match at 20-17. Stan State would get game-point first at 24-20 before SF State scored three straight to get the Gators within one (24-23). Weaver, however, made sure to quash the Gators' comeback hopes there as she received a pass from Burdo and recorded the kill to complete the 25-23 set win.
The fourth set was the Warriors' turn to jump out to the big lead, scoring 10 of the first 13 points. After SF State cut the deficit to 14-12, Stanislaus State went on a 7-2 run to go in front 21-14. It would close out the set by scoring 11 of the last 17 points as Weaver put down the final kill and was mobbed by her teammates at mid-court.
The numbers might not reflect the complete impact of the Warriors' blocking effort, but it was one of the key factors in the victory. Stan State out-blocked SF State 9-6 but also got many hands on the Gators' attacks to make it an easier play for the student-athletes on the backline. The Warriors' defense held the Gators to a .031 hitting percentage in the first set, and only in the second did they hit over .214. Stanislaus State also played excellent defense on Tamiya Wilson, holding the All-CCAA selection without a kill.
Izzy Issak led SF State and all scorers with 18 kills and 18.5 points. She added 12 digs for her 15th double-double. It was also her sixth consecutive match with double-figure kills.
Aidan Goodrich added 14 kills on a .256 hitting percentage, and
Anastacia Garza chipped in with nine.
Stanislaus State advances to the CCAA Tournament championship match on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. The Warriors had won only one CCAA Tournament match in program history before collecting two victories in 2024. They will face the winner of No. 1 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 4 Cal State LA.
