ARCATA, Calif. - For the first time since any Bronco on the team was ever born, Cal Poly Pomona is hoisting the CCAA Tournament Championship trophy. Tournament Offensive MVP
Tara Oper scored two goals and the Broncos' defense posted a clean sheet in wet and rainy conditions to defeat Cal State East Bay 2-0.
Cal Poly Pomona got on the board in the 10th minute when
Marisa Salazar found Oper on the opposite side of the field for an open header from 14 yards out. The second goal would also come off a long pass over the top. Off a free kick from the Broncos' end,
Liberty Ortiz sent a pass over the head of every player on the field. The ball looked like it had sailed beyond the reach of Oper, but it had backspin, and it hung up on the bounce and never reached the keeper. Oper beat the defender and the keeper to the loose ball in the middle of the box before poking it over the top of both for the insurance goal in the 81st minute.
Before the Broncos went up 2-0, the Pioneers had a chance for the equalizer in the 66th minute. CSUEB had a remarkable sequence of passes to get
Gabby Rodil open for a 1v1 with CPP's keeper,
Bella Hara. Rodil took her chance to the left side of the net, with Hara rushing towards her. The shot was online, but Hara stuck out her leg, getting just enough of the ball to deflect it off its line and into the air. The ball landed right in front of the goal, and
Lindsay Sung beat everyone to the spot and cleared the ball to end the threat.
Hara would end the match with three saves.
Ashley Levi, her counterpart from Cal State East Bay, had five.
Hara would be named the Defensive MVP of the tournament as she allowed just one goal in two matches. Teammates
Liberty Ortiz,
Marisa Salazar,
Angelina Rivas,
Vanessa Cruz, and Oper joined her on the all-tournament team. Rodil,
Jaedan Nelson and
Morgan Pearson earned all-tournament honros for Cal State East Bay.
This was Cal Poly Pomona's first championship since 1999 when the CCAA Tournament began. It is the first time since UC San Diego in 2018 that a team has won both the CCAA regular season and tournament championships.
The Broncos and Pioneers will now await their postseason fates which will be announced on the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. Cal Poly Pomona was the No. 1 team in the latest poll and have secured a spot by earning the CCAA's automatic bid. Cal State East Bay was the No. 8 team in the latest regional rankings. They will hope to receive one of the four at-large bids. Seven total teams will earn a place in the regional.
