Mar 9, 2023

Four spots on the 2022-23 D2 CCA NCAA Division II Men's Basketball All-West Region Teams went to student-athletes from the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Brandon Knapper from Cal State San Bernardino and Jaylen Wells from Sonoma State occupied two of the five places on the first team. Greg Milton III from Cal State San Marcos and Dontrell Shuler from Cal State San Bernardino joined them as second-team selections.

Jaylen Wells was the 2022-23 CCAA Player of the Year, presented by College Ave Student Loans. He led the conference in scoring (22.4) and ranked second in rebounding (8.7). Wells recorded 11 double-doubles, scoring at least 13 points in every game. He topped the 30-point plateau seven times, including a season-best 38 points against CCAA Champions, Cal State San Bernardino. His efforts helped Sonoma State go from the team picked last in the preseason coaches poll to earning their first berth in the CCAA Tournament since 2017.

Brandon Knapper was named the CCAA Tournament MVP after leading Cal State San Bernardino to its first tournament title since 2010. The senior point guard ranked second in the conference in scoring (19.7 ppg), third in 3-point percentage (.392), and fourth in assists (4.1). He scored in double-figures in 26 of 28 games, and in half of those games, he went over 20 points. He helped CSUSB win its second consecutive CCAA regular-season title with a 20-2 conference record.

Dontrell Shuler is Knapper's backcourt running mate. He averaged 17.3 ppg (fourth CCAA) and ranked seventh in field goal percentage (.468) on his way to earning the 2022-23 CCAA Newcomer of the Year award. The Columbia, S.C. native collected a pair of CCAA Player of the Week awards and led CSUSB in minutes played. This season Shuler averaged 19.5 ppg against non-conference regional opponents, and he scored in double-figures in his first 17 games as a Yote.

Greg Milton III helped lead Cal State San Marcos into the playoffs as the team's top scorer (17.6 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (4.9 rpg). He is shooting .394 percent from behind the arc, with the most 3-pointers made on the team (54). Milton III posted the CCAA's top-scoring output for any CCAA individual this season with 39 points in the opener against Saint Martin's. He would go over the 20-point plateau eight more times. Milton III helped Cal State San Marcos earn its second consecutive trip to the NCAA West Regional.
