SAN BERNARDINO - No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino is heading back to the NCAA West Regional final for the first time since 2019 after earning a four-set win over No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona (26-24, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-19).
It was the third match of the season between the two CCAA foes, and it showed as points were tough to come by. The teams entered the match ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II in hitting percentage, and each was held at least 50 percentage points below their season mark. But even with the swings there were not many errors as good defense and incredible effort kept many balls alive.
Cal State San Bernardino dug a season-high 81 balls in the match, and Cal Poly was right behind with 76.
"Last night we had a very special night, hitting .440," said CSUSB head coach Kim Cherniss. "Tonight we dug over 20 balls per set (81 total) and that is a real testament to this team and the fact that they can win matches in different ways."
When CSUSB needed a point, it turned to Marlee Nunley to get its All-CCAA hitters the ball in the right position. She dished out 49 assists to go along with nine digs. She found Trinity Sheridan for a match-high 18 kills. Ashley Robinson registered her fourth double-double of the season posting 14 kills and a season-high 18 digs. Jenna Patton added 12 kills on a match-leading .417 hitting percentage.
Daisy Duke and Samantha Campion tied for the Cal Poly Pomona team-lead with 11 kills. Campion added 11 digs to finish the year with 15 double-doubles. Emeline Hudson came off the bench with 10 kills, which doubled her previous season-best.
Cal State San Bernardino will advance to the NCAA regional championship match where it will face Cal State LA in a rematch of the 2023 CCAA Tournament Championship. The NCAA Regional final will be held Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
