A great shot from 21 yards out and a stout defense led No. 1 seed Cal Poly Pomona to a 1-0 win over No. 5 seed Cal Poly Humboldt in the semifinals of the 2023 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. (Nov. 10)

Giselle Samayoa made sure she and her teammates will never forget her first collegiate goal as she scored on one of the most beautiful shots of the entire season. After the ball bounced between bodies at the midfield, the Broncos' Marisa Salazar was able to collect it. She found herself with space to work on the Lumberjacks half of the field and looked up to locate her teammates.

Salazar reversed the ball to the far side of the field, where she hit a sprinting Samayoa stride. The sophomore took two touches on the ball, covering 15 yards before lining up a shot for her third touch. In rhythm, she sent the shot high and to the far corner of the goal. It could not have been a better struck ball as it bent over the keeper and right into the net for the goal.

Cal Poly Humboldt (13-5-2) tried to find the equalizer, but the Broncos thwarted it on each attempt. Goalkeeper Bella Hara made a CPP career-high seven saves, and despite Cal Poly Pomona facing a season-high 13 shot attempts, the defense never yielded a goal to extend its shutout streak to 251 minutes. Carson Thomson-Terrel had three saves for Hunmboldt.

The win sends Cal Poly Pomona (11-4-3) to the CCAA Tournament title match, where they will face No. 2 seed Cal State San Marcos at 1 p.m. with the conference championship and automatic bid on the line. It will be their first appearance in the championship match since 2001, and they will be looking to win their first title since 1999.
