Breann Horn named CCAA Player of the Year; CSUSM sweeps special honors

The Cal State San Marcos women's golf team swept the CCAA women's golf special honors for the 2021-22 season. Sophomore Brenna Horn was voted the conference's Player of the Year, and Diana Delgado was selected as the Newcomer of the Year. Makenna Cabardo earned CCAA Freshman of the Year honors, and Greg Hutton was named the Coach of the Year.
 
Brenna Horn was a four-time CCAA Player of the Week, and she reached as high as No. 4 nationally in the Golfstat individual rankings. The Lakeside native averaged 74.76 strokes per round and posted four top 5 finishes and seven top 10 finishes. Horn won the Visit Stockton Invitational and tied for first at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella with a 1-under 143. With Horn as their No. 1 golfer, the Cougars won five tournaments, including the 2022 CCAA Women's Golf Championship. Only in two tournaments all season did she finish more than seven strokes away from par, and she also picked up her third consecutive All-CCAA selection.
 
Diana Delgado joined her teammate Horn as an All-CCAA selection and a special awards honoree. The 2021-22 CCAA Newcomer of the Year won the CSUSM Fujikura Invite after shooting a 1-under 143. She put together a 76.48 scoring average in her first year competing with the Cougars (second year with the team and added three other top 10 finishes. The West Covina native placed second at the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational and fourth in the Biola Eagle Invite to help lead the Cougars to victories in both tournaments.
 
Makenna Cabardo claimed CCAA Freshman of the Year honors. Cabardo placed second at the 2022 CCAA Championships after finishing with a 68 (-4) in the final round. It was her fifth top 10 finish of the year, and her round was the second-lowest in championship history. Cabardo has a 76.09 stroke per round average, and she moved to No. 43 in the national rankings. The 2021 graduate of Horizon High School (Scottsdale, Ariz.) added an All-CCAA selection to her list of accolades as a true freshman.
 
Greg Hutton was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season to complete Cal State San Marcos' sweep of the conference's special honors. Hutton led the Cougars to five wins during the 2021-22 campaign, including their third consecutive CCAA Championship. The Cougars came back from a first-round deficit to claim the title by 18 strokes. Cal State San Marcos has continually been ranked throughout the season, reaching as high as No. 4 in the national rankings.
 
Madison Murr joined teammates Cabardo, Delgado, and Horn as an All-CCAA selection giving the Cougars four on the 10-person team. Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State also had multiple selections for the all-conference team. Drishti Karumbaya and Jasmin Krishna represented the Pioneers. It was Karumbaya's third consecutive All-CCAA selection. Samantha Cabunag and Lexi Nielsen represented the Seawolves, who were named all-conference for the second straight season. Cal State LA's Morgan Sjoerdsma and Cal State Monterey Bay's Zoe Offield completed the all-conference team. Sjoerdsma won the 2022 CCAA Women's Golf individual title and both were honorable mention selections in 2019-20.
 
All five teams represented on the All-CCAA team are also ranked in the latest NCAA Women's Golf regional rankings (April 14). The final selections for the NCAA Super Regional will be posted on NCAA.com by Monday, April 25. The NCAA West Super Regional is scheduled for May 2-4 at the Brookside Golf & Country Club in Stockton, Calif.
