No. 4 seed, Cal State LA, earned a victory in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament for the fourth consecutive season as they swept the No. 5 seed, Sonoma State, in the opening round, 25-23, 25-13, and 25-16, on Thursday night. (Nov. 18)

The first set was back-and-forth, but the end set the tone for the entire match as Cal State LA was able to swing momentum to its side at that moment, and it never gave it back. Throughout the first set, the teams traded points, with neither side leading by more than three. With the set tied at 23-23, the Golden Eagles did not let their moment to capture the point slip away as Alejandra Negron and Shelby Grubbs each posted kills to give Cal State LA the win in the first set.

The impact of that point was not immediately felt, but Sonoma State would never hold the lead the rest of the match. Cal State LA hit .533 in the second set, with 18 kills and just two errors, to win 25-13 and go up 2-0. In the third set, the Golden Eagles doubled up the Seawolves' .148 hitting percentage and went on to win the set 25-16 and complete the match sweep.

Cal State LA's Karla Santos led all student-athletes with 13 kills. The senior hit .333 in the match and added a double-double with a team-best 11 digs. Emily Elliott chipped in with 11 kills, and Alejandra Negron added eight. Shelby Grubbs, who was presented with the CCAA's Elite 13 Award before the match, had five kills and no errors for a perfect hitting night. Eliza Cannon returned to the lineup for the Golden Eagles and dished out a game-high 20 assists. She was one of four Golden Eagles with at least six assists.

Emily Eaton led Sonoma State with 11 kills. Amy Trephan chipped in with eight, and Kiana Richardson had seven. Riley Beyma's 12 digs paced the Seawolves.

Cal State LA (18-8) will advance to the CCAA Volleyball Tournament semifinals, where it will face the No. 1 seed, Cal State San Bernardino. This is a rematch of the 2019 CCAA Tournament Championship match, which saw the Golden Eagles push the Yotes' to a fifth set. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 19.

The loss ends the 2021 campaign for Sonoma State (13-13).
