Humboldt's Michael Payan earns All-American honors in the pole vault; four qualify for finals on day 1 at NCAAs

PUEBLO, Colo. - Cal Poly Humboldt's Michael Payan earned All-American honors, and four more CCAA student-athletes qualified for the finals in their event on the first day of the 2025 NCAA Men's Track & Field National Championship.
 
Michael Payan placed fifth in the pole vault after breaking his school record with a mark of 17-5.5 (5.32m). He cleared the mark on his second attempt.
 
Stanislaus State's Trent Lauderdale posted a personal best time of 50.45 to finish third in the 400m hurdles. He was seeded ninth coming into the championships.
 
Cal Poly Pomona's Alessio Sommacal will join Lauderdale in the finals. He finished second in the first heat with a time of 50.88. The 400m hurdles finals will be run on Saturday evening.
 
Chico State had two student-athletes qualify for the finals. Hunter Dougherty finished sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:14.05. Damian Garcia placed 10th in the 1500m. He moved up four spots in the final 400m to finish second in his heat and earn a place in the finals.
