ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – San Francisco State overcame a four-run first-inning deficit to advance to the championship game of the CCAA Softball Tournament presented by FloCollege with an 8-5 win over Sonoma State.

Elise Roy held the Seawolves to just one run in relief after she entered the game in the top of the second to give the Gators the comeback opportunity.

SF State’s bats would finally come alive in the bottom of the fourth as it put up four runs to tie the game. Back-to-back singles to open the inning set the table, and with one out, Rylee McDaniel delivered a two-run, opposite-field double to cut the Seawolves’ lead in half (4-2). Two batters later, chaos on the bases ensued to bring in another run before Lexi Holihan tied the game with a run-scoring single.

Sonoma State took back the lead in the fifth after Carissa Marquez singled to right and Kaiya Dickens came around to score as SF State threw the ball around the infield.

Five consecutive Gators would reach base after the first batter in SF State’s half of the fifth struck out. The game-tying run scored on a double by Marley Gonzales and a bases-loaded walk to McDaniel gave SFSU the lead.

In the sixth, Sonoma looked like it would tie the game or even retake the lead after Sophia Newcomb tripled to lead off the inning. However, the next batter hit a rocket to shortstop, which Kai DeLeon snagged on a leap before doubling the runner off third to end the threat.

SF State would add to its lead in the sixth on a double by Daniella Guerrera.

Elise Roy earned the win in relief to improve to 12-8. She allowed five hits and one run in six innings. She walked three and struck out three. Charlie Johnson recorded all 18 outs for Sonoma State. She was touched up for 11 hits and eight runs (six earned).

The top three batters in the Gators’ order combined to go 7-for-11 with three RBI and four runs scored.
