ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -Jasmine Moreno’s three-run, sixth-inning home run broke a 3-3 tie and helped lift No. 4 seed Sonoma State to a 6-3 win over top-seeded Cal State East Bay.
Sonoma State built a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Cal State East Bay could not get much going offensively against Seawolves’ starter
Ava Paquin, but got a break when they received a walk and three of the next four hitters reached on errors. Those errors brought in two runs, and an RBI ground out by
Marissa Farias tied the game at 3-3.
The score would not remain there for long as two of the first three batters singled for the Seawolves, bringing Moreno to the plate with runners at the corners. The senior saw two pitches before launching a home run deep over the left field wall. It was the first homer of the 2025 CCAA Tournament.
The Pioneers would put two runners on in their half of the sixth, but Sonoma State’s
Charlie Johnson was able to get two groundballs to get out of the jam. She would pitch a perfect seventh inning to earn the win.
Ava Paquin allowed only one hit in her 3.2 innings as the starting pitcher for the Seawolves. She walked two and struck out five.
The top four hitters in the lineup for SSU combined to go 7-for-15 with four RBI and all six runs scored.
Sophia Newcomb,
Amari Houston, and
Lauren Mirtoni each collected two hits, and Moreno knocked in three runs.
Alexa Zumstein and
Marissa Farias each drove in a run for Cal State East Bay.
With the win, Sonoma State advances in the winner’s bracket. It will next play on Friday, May 2, at Noon against the winner of No. 2 seed San Francisco State and No. 3 seed Cal State San Marcos. Cal State East Bay moves into the elimination portion of the bracket. It will face the loser of CSUSM/SFSU in an elimination game later today.
