Toros finish their 2025 campaign as national runners-up

[Box score]

PITTSBURGH - The incredible 2024-25 season of Cal State Dominguez Hills ended in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball national championship with a 70-58 loss to top-seeded Grand Valley State.

The Toros entered the game with a CCAA record 36 wins, but it needed one more to clinch the first women's basketball championship in school history.

They did not blink early, facing a team that had been ranked No. 1 for most of the season. The Toros would take their largest lead of the game, going in front early at 7-2. The Lakers closed out the first quarter on an 8-1 run to go in front 17-12, and the Toros would not get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Grand Valley State would go on a 23-7 run in the second quarter and take a 17-point lead into halftime (38-21). The Lakers were still up 15 at the start of the fourth quarter (53-38). With time ticking away, CSUDH turned up the intensity of its press and got some defensive stops to bring the game within 12 points. Kya Pearson made some very nice plays during the comeback attempt with multiple contested laups and a 3-pointer. However, CSUDH was unable to cut the deficit back to single digits as GVSU answered the run and held on to win its first NCAA Division II championship since 2006.

CSUDH's Asia Jordan registered a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds to record her second consecutive double-double, and third in the NCAA Tournament. She was 7-of-11 from the field. Kya Pearson was the only other Toro to shoot over 50 percent. The senior recorded 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The 11 points were just one short of her season high.

Freshman MacKenzie Bisballe led GVSU with 14 points. Her sister, Rylie Bisballe, added 13 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Ellie Droste had 11 points, as 10 different Lakers found their way into the scoring column.

CSUDH would force Grand Valley State into 26 turnovers, but the Lakers neutralized that advantage by outrebounding the Toros by 11 (36-25). GVSU's bench scored 44 of its 70 points.

This concludes the season for Cal State Dominguez Hills. The 36 wins (36-2) are a CCAA single-season record, and it is the second time in three seasons the Toros have reached the 30-win plateau while winning the regional and going to the Elite Eight.

This was the program's first appearance in the NCAA Championship game, and CSUDH is only the third school in NCAA history to have its men's and women's teams play for the national championship in the same season. The Toros were also the first CCAA women's basketball team to play for a national title since Cal Poly Pomona in 2002.
