PITTSBURGH - Cal State Dominguez Hills will play for the NCAA Division II National Championship after defeating Union (TN) 68-50 in the semifinals on Wednesday, Mar. 26.
Four student-athletes combined to score 66 of the Toros' 68 points.
Nala Williams led the way with 21 points, four rebounds, and five assists. She made 5-of-8 3-pointers and also had three steals.
Asia Jordan recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She was 9-of-11 from the field and added a team-leading six assists.
Teagan Thurman scored 11 of her 14 points in the first half to help CSUDH build a 36-25 halftime lead.
Cristina Jones registered 12 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the field. The only points scored outside of these four were the first two points of the game, which came on free throws by
Kya Pearson.
Just as it was in the Elite Eight game, the Toros' press defense was relentless from the opening tip to the last whistle. It forced the Bulldogs into 21 turnovers, and CSUDH outscored Union 20-10 on points off turnovers.
After trading baskets early, Dominguez Hills closed out the first quarter with a 17-14 lead. It then scored 14 of the first 16 points in the second quarter, opening a 31-16 lead. CSUDH would take an 11-point advantage into the locker room (36-25).
The start of the third quarter is where Cal State Dominguez Hills put the game away as it opened the quarter on a 12-2 run to push its lead to 21 points (48-27). Union would get back within 12 points with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer by Williams ended their run and sent the lead back to 15 points. CSUDH outscored Union in every quarter.
Emily Jones was the only Bulldog in double-figures with 13 points. CSUDH held Union to just 6-of-27 shooting from behind the 3-point line.
CSUDH is the first CCAA team to reach the NCAA Championship game since Cal Poly Pomona won the title in 2002.
Cal State Dominguez State will face the winner of No. 1 Grand Valley State and No. 4 Pittsburg State in the national championship game on Friday, Mar. 28, at 4 p.m.
