CARSON, Calif. - Senior
Asia Jordan came through when her team needed her most, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 63-61 win over Alaska Anchorage in the NCAA West Regional semifinals.
The Toros needed all eight made baskets and eight free throws Jordan provided as they were held 16 points below their season scoring average (79.1) and outscored 24-2 in second-chance points.
CSUDH built a 12-point lead in the first quarter (23-11) and went in front by as many as 17 in the second quarter (34-17). Alaska Anchorage would cut its deficit to 10 at the half (42-32) and carried that momentum through to the second half as the Seawolves scored 17 of the first 19 points to take a five-point lead (49-44).
Jordan would bring momentum back to the Toros as she converted on an and-1 layup and helped get a defensive stand in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter.
CSUDH would storm out of the gates to open the fourth, opening with an 8-0 run to retake the lead for good at 55-49. UAA would get back within a possession after
Elaina Mack made all three free throws with eight seconds left (61-58). However, CSUDH was able to break the press on the subsequent possession as
Cristina Jones found Jordan wide open under the far hoop for the game-clinching basket.
Tori Hollingshead had 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead Alaska Anchorage. Mack also scored 17 points as she came off the bench to hit 5-of-9 shots, including four 3-pointers. CSUDH was able to limit D2 CCA first team all-region selection Emilia Long to seven points on 1-of-12 shooting. She also entered the game locked in with
Nala Williams for the NCAA Div. II lead in steals. Long ended the game without a steal, while Williams had five. Jones was the only Toro besides Jordan in double-figures. She scored 15 poitns on 6-of-10 shooting and added seven rebounds.
Cal State Dominguez Hills lost the battle of the boards, 42-32, leading to UAA outscoring it 24-2 in second-chance points. It was only the sixth time CSUDH had been outrebounded this season, and only the second by double-figures (CPP on 1/2/25, +18).
The Toros (33-1) will advance to their second regional championship game in the past three seasons. They will face Central Washington out of the GNAC on Monday, Mar. 17, at 7 p.m., with a ticket to the Elite Eight on the line.
