DALLAS - Cal Poly Pomona's defense has been its calling card during its two incredible years of NCAA postseason runs. That unit proved to be vital once again as the Broncos shut out the nation's No. 1 team, Dallas Baptist, on its own field, 2-0, to advance to the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship semifinals for the second consecutive season.
Marisa Salazar scored the would-be game-winner in the 34th minute on an assist from
Kiarra D'Arcangelo. This was Salazar's second goal in four postseason matches, and it marks the third time D'Arcangelo has recorded an assist or a goal in that same stretch.
Vanessa Cruz added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 56th minute after she drew a foul in the box.
Goalkeeper
Jenna Tetrault did not have to make a single save in the match. Cal Poly Pomona would outshoot DBU 14-6, including 5-0 in the second half.
The Patriots entered the match with a record of 20-1-0 and leading NCAA Div. II in scoring offense (3.48), points per game (10.86), and goal differential (plus-64). It marked just the third time in the past three seasons that DBU has been shut out. It is the Broncos' 13th shutout, and fourth straight. They have still not allowed a goal in 360 minutes of NCAA postseason play.
Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the final site in Colorado Springs, Colo., where it will face Florida Tech on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 5 p.m. PST.
