TURLOCK, Calif. - The second day of the 2024 CCAA Track & Field Championships saw a meet record set in the long jump and nine first-time CCAA Champions crowned among numerous outstanding performances as the meet kicked into high gear.

Cal State LA's Jonon Young shattered a conference meet record that stood for 32 years with a mark of 21-3.25 (6.48 meters) in the long jump. That mark eclipsed Christy Opara's (Cal State LA) record set in 1992 by nearly seven inches (6.75) and moved Young to the top spot in NCAA Division II. Young had two other jumps that beat the old record before setting a personal best on her fifth attempt. She won the event by two feet and two inches, with a greater distance between herself and second place than second and 11th place.

While Young was capturing her first CCAA conference title, Chico State's Marissa D'Atri won her third consecutive 3k steeplechase championship. She posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 10:57.59 to win the event by over 30 seconds. The senior from Martinez, Calif., has won every CCAA steeplechase since 2022. She will go for her third straight title in the 5k tomorrow. Chico State also won the men's steeplechase as Hunter Dougherty registered an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time of 9:05.86.

Cal Poly Humboldt collected CCAA titles in the heptathlon and the decathlon. Cocome McKamey placed first or second in all seven events to earn an NCAA Provisional Standard and win the meet with 4996 points. Those are the most points scored at the CCAA Championships since 2017 (Marissa McCoy, Humboldt). Her teammate and 2022 champion, Grace Kasberger, finished second with an NCAA Provisional total of 4806 points.  Her total was over 500 more points than when she won. Bryce Pearson captured the men's decathlon championship with NCAA Provisional 6510 points. He won the 100m, 400m, long jump, and high jump en route to his first career CCAA Championship. He is the first Lumberjack to win the decathlon since Teigan Eilers in 2015.

Cal State San Marcos also put a pair in the winner's circle, with Kalathan Laiwa-McKay winning the men's shot put and Lily McGraw winning the women's pole vault. Laiwa-McKay defended his title in the shot put with an NCAA Provisional throw of 55-7.5 (16.95m). That mark was almost three feet longer than his championship throw a season ago. McGraw became the first Cal State San Marcos student-athlete to win a CCAA pole vault title. The sophomore from Oceanside, Calif., edged out San Francisco State's Amy Christiansen and Cal Poly Pomona's Isabelle Carreon for the title as McGraw cleared 12-8 (3.86m) on her first attempt. Christiansen and Carreon did on their second to give McGraw the tiebreaker.

The women's shot put title went to Cal Poly Pomona's Shona Christiansen with a throw of 43-10 (13.36m). Her mark was almost a meter longer than second place.

Darius Hill led a group of three Cal Poly Pomona long jumpers, all earning NCAA Provisional marks, with a distance of 25-0.75 (7.64m). Justin Cardoza placed second, and Deandre Smith took third. Those top 3 finishes gave Cal Poly Pomona 24 team points as they are tied with Chico State with 86 points apiece going into the final day.

Chico State will take a nine-point lead (51 total) into Saturday as they seek their first conference title since 2017. Cal Poly Pomona is second with 42 points, and Stanislaus State is third with 40 points.

The final day of the 2024 CCAA Track & Field Championships will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the men's triple jump. Running events will start at 1:05 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay.
