SAN MARCOS, Calif. -
Jayline Sloss pitched her first game since learning she was named the 2024 CCAA Pitcher of the Year, and she proved the voters right by delivering a gem for No. 2 seed Cal State San Marcos in a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Cal State Dominguez Hills. (May 3)
Sloss did not give up a run over the first six innings as her team built a 5-0 lead.
Paige Donnelly drove in the first two on a two-run double in the third and another on a single in the fourth.
That was more than enough for Sloss in this game. The junior right-hander relied on her defense to make plays behind her, and they came through with an errorless game.
The Toros would make things interesting in the top of the seventh. After the first two batters of the innings made outs,
Jay Ross singled, and
Mariah Ramirez walked. A single by
Kaylee Hull ended Sloss's shutout, but two batters later, she recorded her second strikeout to finish the game.
With the win, Sloss improved to 16-8. She finished allowing seven hits and two runs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will move to the elimination portion of the bracket and will face No. 1 seed Sonoma State in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. Cal State San Marcos moves into the winner's bracket and will face No. 4 seed Cal State East Bay in the first game on Friday at Noon.
