Late run sends Golden Eagles soaring into CCAA Tournament semifinals

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - No. 4 seed Cal State LA defeated No. 5 seed Cal State San Bernardino in a 78-64 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2024 CCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. (Mar 7)
 
Four players reached double figures for the Golden Eagles; Nicole Flennaugh led with 18 points, Alicia Jones added 14 and Olivia Hodges followed closely behind with 11. Lily Buggs recorded a double-double on the night with 14 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
 
Converting defense to offense, the Golden Eagles controlled the boards 49-32 to outscore the Coyotes 16-2 in fast break points.
 
Cal State LA took an early lead in the first quarter after a 9-0 scoring run, Buggs accounted for five points to get the Golden Eagles a lead they would never give up.  
 
The Golden Eagles remained in a comfortable lead up until the fourth quarter when the Coyotes started to chip away at their lead. It was just a two-point game with 6:12 remaining before the Golden Eagles put together a final run of eight points behind a three-pointer by Buggs to regain momentum. CSLA outscored CSUSB 19-7 in the final five minutes.
 
Cal State LA advances to the CCAA semifinals game on Friday, Mar. 8, at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles will face the No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos.
