Cal State San Marcos fell to Central Oklahoma 10-6 in the elimination bracket of the 2023 NCAA Softball Championships.
Central Oklahoma scored five runs with two outs in the top of the second and answered each time the Cougars put a run on the board to hold onto the win.
The Bronchos loaded the bases with one out, and it looked like the Cougars might escape the threat after cutting down the lead runner at the plate on a grounder for the second out of the inning. The next batter was hit by a pitch, forcing in the first run of the game. A single by leadoff hitter Rylee Lemos brought in another run before Emily Deramus cleared the bases with a three-run double (5-0).
The teams exchanged runs in the bottom of the third, and the top of the fourth, and then Cal State San Marcos had its best offensive inning of the day. The first four batters all recorded single, and
Ryann Steiner earned a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-3. A fielder's choice got CSUSM another run, and they capped off the four-run rally with a run-scoring single by
Makenzie Guiliano to make the game 6-5.
The Cougars needed a shutdown inning in the top of the fifth, but it eluded them as UCO scored three runs, two of which were unearned, to push its lead to 9-5.
CSUSM would get an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit back to three (9-6). The Cougars would get their leadoff runner on in the bottom of the seventh but could not mount the comeback and were eliminated from the NCAA Softball Championships.
Guiliano collected three of the Cougars' 11 hits. Every starter for CSUSM had a hit except
Czar Fleischman, who still drove in a team-leading two runs. Bianca Gutierrez had a pair of singles to go along with an RBI, and two runs scored.
Four Bronchos drove in two or more runs for UCO. Deramus had three RBI from clearing the bases, and Shayleigh Odom, Mikayla Rutland, and Lemos each had two.
The Cougars end their season at 33-21. This was CSUSM's first appearance at the NCAA Softball Championships.
