Cal State San Marcos completed its dominant run through the NCAA West Regional and Super Regional by winning its fifth consecutive game, 4-3, at top-seeded Concordia. (May 19)
The Cougars were focused on a mission of capturing the regional title since bowing out of the CCAA Tournament early and coach Stef Ewing declaring, "we aren't done yet!" in the postgame interview.
You could hear the same words in the metallic 'ting' that echoed off the bat of the third baseman
Madison Waymire when she squared up an 0-2 pitch and launched it deep over the left-center field wall to give CSUSM the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Her homer capped off a three-run rally as CSUSM tied the game earlier in the inning on a pair of CUI errors.
The stellar combo of
Jayline Sloss and
Savannah Coyle delivered finished its second great weekend of pitching for the Cougars. The Golden Eagles scored all three runs in the third when they rallied with two outs. They would not get a runner past second base the rest of the game. The Sloss/Coyle combo allowed only three earned runs in the last 33 innings.
Sloss won her fifth game in five regional starts after throwing six innings. She allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four. She is now 11-7 on the season with a 2.12 earned run average.
Savannah Coyle collected her fourth save of the season, pitching a perfect seventh.
Cal State San Marcos will advance to the eight-team NCAA Championships starting May 25 in Chattanooga, Tenn. T
