IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State San Marcos continued its excellent start to the NCAA playoffs as it went into Irvine and shutout top-seeded Concordia, 9-0, in the first game of the NCAA West Super Regional.
Jayline Sloss and
Savannah Coyle again baffled their opponents as the offense gave the Cougars the early lead. The duo has now pitched 26 innings in the postseason, allowing just one earned run. They have not given up a run since the third inning of their opening game and now ride a streak of 23 consecutive scoreless innings.
CSUSM put up one run in the second on a two-out double by
Czar Fleischman before adding three runs in the top of the third to go up 4-0. Madison Waymire doubled home
Mackenzie Kestler to start the scoring and before coming home to score on a Jillian Albayati home run.
Fleischman added a three-run homer in the seventh to extend the lead to 9-0. She went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBI while hitting out of the nine-hole in the lineup. Waymire,
Aneesa Arredondo, and
Makenzie Guillano all had three hits in the game as the Cougars outhit the Golden Eagles 15-3.
Sloss improved to 10-7 with the shutout win. She allowed two hits and three walks over five innings. Coyle went the last two allowing only one hit while striking out one. It was just the fourth time all season Concordia has been shutout.
The two teams will meet again on Friday. Cal State San Marcos will need only one win to advance to the NCAA Softball National Championships. Concordia will have to beat them twice.
