CCAA Softball teams pick up wins on first day of NCAA West Regional

Two CCAA softball teams earned wins at the NCAA West Regional on Thursday, May 11.
 
#2 Cal State Dominguez Hills 1, #7 Azusa Pacific 0 (8 innings) [Box score]
For the second time in as many games, Nayah Pola came through with a walk-off win for the Toros. Following up on her three-run homer to win the 2023 CCAA Softball Tournament, Pola drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to account for the only run in a 1-0 win over Azusa Pacific.
 
Alyssa Olague went the distance for the Toros throwing eight scoreless innings. The senior right-hander allowed eight hits and no runs in her second-longest outing of the season. Only one runner for APU reached third base.
 
She was matched almost pitch for pitch by APU's Katie Kortstrom. She went the distance for the Cougars, allowing three hits and the one run. She walked seven and struck out one.
 
CSUDH will play fellow CCAA member Cal State San Marcos in the second round on Friday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m.
 
#6 Cal State San Marcos 13, #3 Sonoma State (5 innings) [Box score]
Cal State San Marcos scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to run-rule the NCAA Regional hosts, Sonoma State 13-1.
 
The Cougars sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning, while the Seawolves made two pitching changes. Madison Waymire put the first run on the board with an RBI single to centerfield and capped it off with an RBI single to left. In the inning, all but one Cougar in the lineup reached base.
 
Waymire went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. She was one of four Cougars to record a multi-RBI game.
 
Jayline Sloss earned the win with four innings of one-run ball. She walked two and struck out six.
 
#4 Northwest Nazarene 1, #5 Cal State San Bernardino 0 (9 innings) [Box score]
Northwest Nazarene's Kellcie Adams drove in the only run of the game in the ninth inning to defeat Cal State San Bernardino 1-0.
 
The two teams combined for just six hits in the game as the starting pitchers, Samantha Vargas (CSUSB) and Sidney Booth (NNU), were dealing. Vargas allowed just one run and four hits over 8.1 innings. She walked six and struck out five. Booth was even better. She went nine full innings allowing no runs and just two hits. She walked one and struck out 11.
 
Cal State San Bernardino will play Biola in an elimination game on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
