Coming off its fourth consecutive CCAA Women's Golf Champion, Cal State San Marcos claimed three of the conference's four postseason honors, including
Breann Horn repeating as the CCAA Player of the Year, presented by College Ave Student Loans. Horn's teammate
Caroline Wales was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year, and her coach
Greg Hutton was voted the CCAA Coach of the Year. Sonoma State's
Talia Gutman earned CCAA Freshman of the Year honors.
Breann Horn collected her second consecutive CCAA Player of the Year honor after putting together one of the most consistent seasons in the country. The junior from Lakeside ranked third in the West Region and 17th in NCAA Division II, according to Golfstat, with a 74.5 stroke average across 22 rounds. Horn started the season with a third-place finish (-1, 143) at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella and went on to collect five more top-10 finishes. She placed second at the CSUSM Shootout and fourth at the CCAA Championships. Horn won the HPU Shark Shootout with a -7 (137). It was her fourth career tournament victory. Her award marks the fifth straight season a student-athlete from Cal State San Marcos has earned CCAA Player of the Year.
Jaime Jacob won the first three seasons (2018-20) and Horn the last two.
Caroline Wales gave Cal State San Marcos its second consecutive CCAA Newcomer of the Year (
Diana Delgado). The Kansas transfer won the 2023 CCAA Women's Golf Championship with a 2-over 218 to highlight her sophomore season. She tied for first at the Nick Turner Invitational (+1) and placed fifth at the CSU San Marcos Fujikura Invite. Wales takes a scoring average of 75.73 into postseason competition after finishing the CCAA Tournament with two rounds at even par.
Sonoma State's
Talia Gutman claimed CCAA Freshman of the Year honors. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was the top-ranked golfer for the Seawolves, averaging 76.39 strokes over 18 rounds. She posted top 15 finishes in five of the nine tournaments, including placing second at the CCAA Championships with a 220 (+4). Gutman was the only golfer in the field to shoot a round under par as she led after the first day with -1 (71). She placed third at the Sonoma State Spring Invite and seventh at the Dennis Rose Invitational. Gutman is the third Freshman of the Year from Sonoma State in the past four seasons.
CCAA Coach of the Year honors went to Cal State San Marcos'
Greg Hutton for the fifth consecutive season. The ninth-year head coach helped guide the Cougars to a top-10 ranking and their fourth consecutive CCAA Championship. He also directed the Cougars to two more tournament wins and four second-place finishes. In ten tournaments, Cal State San Marcos only finished below fourth once. Hutton also helped the Cougars extend their run of five consecutive CCAA Players of the Year.
Cal State San Marcos led the conference with three first-team All-CCAA selections and four overall.
Madison Murr joined Wales and Horn as a first-team selection, with
Makenna Cabardo earning an honorable mention pick from the coaches.
Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay each placed two golfers on the first team and another on the honorable mention list.
Mandi Granato and
Drishti Karumbaya represented the Pioneers on the first team, and
Jasmin Krishna picked up an honorable mention nod.
Isabel Carpenter and
Wa Yeung Tong picked up first-team selection for the Otters, with
Zoe Offield being placed on the honorable mention team.
In an impressive display of consistency, Karumbaya, Offield, and Horn all earned All-CCAA honors for the fourth time in their careers. Horn and Karumbaya earned first-team selections all four seasons, beginning in 2018-19. Offield made two first teams and bookended her career with honorable mention picks. These three are the only golfers in CCAA history to achieve the feat of four All-CCAA selections.
Morgan Sjoerdsma and Carpenter were voted to the all-conference team for the third time, while four more earned it for the second time in their career.
Three CCAA teams are currently listed in the top 14 of the NCAA Super Regional rankings. Cal State San Marcos is No. 2, Cal State East Bay is No. 6, and Cal State LA is No. 13. Ten teams will be selected to compete in the Super Regional, May 8-10, in Dallas, Texas.
