No. 3 seed Sonoma State scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for the 12-8 win over No. 1 seed Cal State San Marcos in the semifinal match of the 2022 CCAA Softball Championship.
Skylar Linnane, Jordyn Martinez, and Reagan Hunt all homered in the game as the Seawolves broke the CCAA Tournament record for total runs scored with 34 through just three games.
It was Hunt's three-run homer that capped off the seven-run first inning for Sonoma State. The first three batters of the inning reached base. The Seawolves then scored on a single, a sac fly, an error, and a wild pitch before Hunt went opposite field with a three-run blast over the right-center field wall. Five of the seven runs in the inning were unearned.
Cal State San Marcos continued to cut into the deficit throughout the next five innings until a two-out, two-run double by Bianca Gutierrez cut it to one at 9-8. On the play, the left-handed batter sliced the ball to left field, and it hit on the foul line and skipped away from the left fielder allowing the runners from first and second to come around and score. However, Gutierrez was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.
The first batter for Sonoma State, Jordyn Martinez, immediately brought the momentum back into the Seawolves' dugout as she homered over the scoreboard to extend the lead back to 10-8. Sonoma State would tack on two more unearned runs to go back up by four (12-8).
Bailee Reed then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to complete the win and send Sonoma State back to the championship game. Reed earned the win by throwing the final 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned).
Linnane, Martinez, and Hunt all went 2-for-4 in the game. Linnane had a double, a home run, two RBI, and three runs scored. Reagan Hunt finished with three RBI, and Martinez crossed the plate twice. Bianca Gutierrez, Morgan Salgado, Gianna Lombardi, and Nikki Andelin each had two hits for the Cougars.
Sonoma State will now return to the championship game to defend their CCAA Tournament Championship. The Seawolves won the last contested CCAA Tournament Championship in 2019 when they defeated Cal State San Bernardino.
