Cal State San Marcos scored five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Ryann Steiner, to earn the program's first CCAA tournament win with a 10-4 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
Jayline Sloss (13-2) went the first five innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. Savannah Coyle pitched the last two innings allowing one hit and two unearned runs.
At the plate, Coyle collected two hits and finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Nikki Andelin notched two RBI and two runs scored as the Cougars added runs in each of the next three innings.
Cal State Monterey Bay rallied for two runs in the sixth, but Cal State San Marcos answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning before Coyle shut it down in the seventh.
Cal State San Marcos will advance to the semifinal game in the winners bracket on Friday, May 6, at 4 p.m. Cal State Monterey Bay drops into the elimination bracket, where it will face Cal State East Bay on Friday at 1:30 p.m.
