2022 All-CCAA Softball Team >>>
The CCAA individual award winners and All-CCAA squads have been announced as the 2022 CCAA Softball Tournament is slated to get underway Thursday from Otter Sports Complex on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.
San Francisco State's Brylynn Vallejos was named the Most Valuable Player to headline the list of 31 honorees and five special award winners as voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches.
Chico State's Brooke Larsen was voted the Most Valuable Pitcher, and Cal State San Marcos' Savannah Coyle was selected as the Freshman of the Year. Paige Donnelly collected Newcomer of the Year, and her coach Steph Ewing was named the Coach of the Year.
Brylynn Vallejos was an offensive standout at the top of the order all season for the Gators. The sophomore outfielder led the CCAA in hits (75), doubles (17), home runs (10), and runs scored (64). She ranked fourth in batting average (.408), third in on-base percentage (.464), and second in both slugging percentage (.717) and stolen bases (37). Vallejos was also in the top 10 of the conference in triples (fifth, 5), and her 118 total bases have her ranked 18th in NCAA Division II. Vallejos collected two CCAA Player of the Week awards during the season, and she posted multi-hit games in 23-of-53 contests, including two different 4-for-4 performances. She is the first San Francisco State student-athlete ever to win CCAA Softball Player of the Year.
The 2022 CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher award went to Chico State's
Brooke Larsen. For the second consecutive season, the senior right-hander from Sacramento led the CCAA in strikeouts (214), shutouts (10), complete games (20) and opponent batting average (.190). She tied for the conference lead with a 1.43 earned run average and was third in wins (18). Larsen earned a pair of CCAA Pitcher of the Week awards throughout the season, and she helped Chico State finish second in the standings (26-10). This was the second straight CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher award for Larsen, and it extended Chico State's run on the league's top pitching honor to four consecutive seasons. Larsen was also the CCAA Newcomer of the Year in 2019.
Paige Donnelly led the CCAA in batting average (.442), runs batted in (54), on-base percentage (.493), and slugging percentage (.752) en route to being named CCAA Newcomer of the Year. The redshirt freshman from Poway tied for seventh in home runs (7) and fourth in doubles (15). Her 54 RBI were 10 more than second place, and she won the batting crown by 16 percentage points. Donnelly never went more than three games without an RBI, and she posted two games with five RBI and another with four.
Savannah Coyle made an immediate impact on the Cal State San Marcos team by winning the Most Outstanding Player in the season's opening tournament, and Oceanside native carried that momentum with her to CCAA Freshman the Year honors. The two-way player helped Cal State San Marcos at the plate and in the circle. She tied for the CCAA lead with 1.43 ERA and was fourth with 17 wins. She also paced the CCAA with five saves and finished sixth in strikeouts. At the plate, Coyle was eighth in the conference in batting average (.394) and seventh in on-base percentage (.455).
Cougars' coach
Stef Ewing led Cal State San Marcos to its first CCAA championship as the Cougars finished 28-8 in conference play (39-9). Cal State San Marcos was picked eighth in the CCAA preseason coaches' poll before climbing as high as No. 4 in the national rankings. Under Ewing, the Cougars lost back-to-back games just twice this season, and they put together winning streaks of 13 and 14 games. The fourth-year (third season) head coach guided the Cougars to an 11-1 record in non-conference play, including a doubleheader sweep of No. 2 Concordia.
All four special award winners were also selected to the All-CCAA first team.
