Another No. 1 goes down against the Toros, and this time it is the nation's unanimous No. 1 team, UT-Tyler. After defeating the No. 1 seeds in the regional and the super regional, Cal State Dominguez Hills was back at it with a 5-1 win over the top seed in the NCAA Softball Championships.
Maiya Lopez gave the Toros the early lead with a two-run homer in the second. A run-scoring double by Kianna Abellera added an insurance run in the third inning, and Raquel Jaime extended it to 5-0 with a two-out, two-run double in the fourth.
Ashley Wies took over for starter Alyssa Olague in the second inning and went the rest of the way. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one run and eight hits. She walked one and struck out three.
UT-Tyler's only run came on back-to-back two-out doubles in the fifth.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will advance in the winners' bracket to play Rogers State on Friday, May 27, at 10 a.m.
