ARCATA, Calif. - Cal State East Bay knew the opportunity the 2022 CCAA Women's Basketball Tournament final presented. Not only was the Tournament Championship on the line but also possibly to host the NCAA West Regional, and they seized on that opportunity with one of their most complete games of the season.
The Pioneers (22-2) led wire-to-wire en route to capturing the program's third Tournament Championship with an 80-66 win over Cal State San Marcos.
Tournament MVP Zhane Duckett fueled Cal State East Bay's offensive attack and defensive energy. The sophomore point guard posted 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals to help the Pioneers score one point short of their season-high.
Delia Moore led the Pioneers with 15 points. Madison Schiller added 15 points to go along with five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Akayla Hackson led Cal State San Marcos with 19 points as she went 11-of-13 from the free throw line.
From the opening tip, the Pioneers played with an intensity that seemed to put Cal State San Marcos on their heels. They scored the first two baskets of the game, and the Cougars never saw the lead. A 3-pointer by Christina Bacci put Cal State East Bay up 17 (38-21) with just under four minutes left in the second quarter, and it took an 11-point lead (38-27) into halftime.
The break did not slow the Pioneers' momentum at all. They went on an 11-4 run to open the second half and push the lead to 49-31. Cal State San Marcos would never get the game to single digits again.
Cal State East Bay's defense held the Cougars to just .328 percent shooting in the game and 66 points. It was only the third time all season that Cal State San Marcos scored under 70 points. Meanwhile, the Pioneers shot .452 percent from the field and 19-of-27 from the free throw line.
This is the third overall CCAA Tournament Championship for Cal State East Bay women's basketball program and its first since 2017.
Both teams will now await their regional fate. Cal State East Bay was the No. 1 team in the latest regional rankings and may host the regional. Cal State San Marcos, who entered the week as the No. 3 team in the regional, will also open NCAA postseason play next week.
