Chico State pushed the No. 3 seed, Augusta, to the brink of elimination in their Elite Eight matchup, but the Jaguars were found a way in overtime to prevail, 81-69. (March 22)
The sixth-seeded Wildcats trailed throughout the first half and went into halftime down 36-30. They tied the game early in the second half and used a 9-0 run to take their largest lead at 56-50 with eight minutes remaining.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by the Jaguars quickly erased Chico State's lead, and the teams traded baskets over the next six minutes until Colby Orr's free throw put Chico up 66-64 with 1:09 on the clock. On the next possession, the Wildcats forced a turnover but could not convert on their end, giving Augusta one more chance.
Miguel Arnold did not hesitate when he got the ball in his hands as he drove straight to the hoop with the left hand. He drew multiple defenders to him before dishing off to 7-1 Tyshaun Crawford for the easy dunk to tie the game at 66-66.
Chico State had a chance to win it in regulation as Orr's contested 3-point attempt missed the rim entirely and fell into Duffy's lap as time was expiring. He tried to get the ball up for a putback, but the timing and angle were against him, and the game went to overtime.
The Wildcats could not find their shooting stroke in the extra frame going just 1-for-11 from the field. Meanwhile, the Jaguars hit 4-of-5 shots in overtime, including their first three from behind the arc to earn the win.
Augusta's Miguel Arnold led all scorers with 33 points. He was 13-of-17 from the field and 7-of-10 from 3-point range. The Jaguars also got 15 points and 14 rebounds from Tyshaun Crawford and 13 points from Tyree Myers.
Malik Duffy had 23 points to lead Chico State. Kelvin Wright added 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Brennan Wheeler came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers and score a career-high 10 points.
The Wildcats turned the ball over just six times as they were able to stay in the contest despite shooting just .343 percent. In contrast, Augusta hit .525 percent of its shots from the field and 11-of-22 from behind the arc.
