Cal State East Bay falls in regional championship

The magical season for Cal State East Bay came to an end in the NCAA West Regional championship game when it fell to Western Washington 73-59.
 
Playing in from an energized crowd at Pioneer Gym, Cal State East Bay built an early three-point lead (10-7). A 7-0 spurt by the Vikings gave them the advantage midway through the first quarter, and the Pioneers would never hold the lead again.
 
East Bay cut it to five with 6:30 left in the second quarter, but the Vikings made a late run to take a 40-27 lead into halftime. It was still an 11-point game (54-43) entering the fourth quarter. The Pioneers made one last push as Madison Schiller hit a jumper, and Dalia Moore followed with a free throw to make it 58-50 with 4:34 remaining. The Vikings answered with a 10-3 run over the next three minutes to close the game.
 
Schiller led East Bay with 15 points, and she added two steals. Taylor Linzie just missed a double-double as she scored nine points and pulled down 10 boards. Zhane Duckett and Mina Tameliau chipped in with eight points and six rebounds apiece. Emma Duff and Brooke Walling each scored 16 points to lead the Vikings.
 
In the end, it was an off-shooting night for the Pioneers. East Bay hit just .292 percent of their shots from the field and was 3-of-15 from 3-point range. The Vikings also outscored the Pioneers by 11 points from the free throw line (25-14).
 
Cal State East Bay completes its season at 24-3. This was the Pioneer's third NCAA Tournament appearance and this was the furthest they have ever advanced.
