Dominant defensive effort sends Cal State East Bay into regional semifinals

The tenacity and intensity of Cal State East Bay's defense was in full display on Friday night as the Pioneers dominated Academy of Art, 67-48, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Basketball West Regional.
 
East Bay held the Urban Knights to just 2-for-16 shooting in the first quarter and took a 26-19 lead into halftime. The third quarter is where they pulled away.
 
Academy of Art made just one basket in the third quarter (1-for-15) as the Pioneers outscored them 25-9 to run their lead up to 23 points (51-28). The Urban Knights would never get closer than 18 points the rest of the game.
 
Mina Tameliau led three Pioneers in double-figures with 16 points (7-of-13) and eight rebounds. Madison Schiller added 13 points and three steals. Delia Moore chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Chanel Stuart paced Academy of Art with 16 points but the Pioneers' defense held her to 5-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-16 from behind the arc.
 
The Urban Knights finished the game shooting just .242 percent from the field (16-of-66) and 7-of-27 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay also won the rebounding battle 49-36 while shooting .472 percent as a team.
 
Cal State East Bay will take on the winner of No. 4 Cal State San Marcos and No. 5 Azusa Pacific in the regional semifinals on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m.
