Sonoma State headlined the 2022 CCAA Women's Soccer special awards. Julia Pritchard earned CCAA Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, and her teammate, Lexi Zandonella-Arasa, was voted the Offensive Player of the Year.
Pritchard and Zandonella were joined by CCAA Freshman of the Year, Annette Sotelo, and CCAA Coach of the Year, Emiria Salzmann.
Stanislaus State, who shared the CCAA regular-season title with Sonoma State, also captured two special honors. Alexis Brewah was named the Newcomer of the Year, and Sabrina Cabrera earned the new Midfielder of the Year award. Cal State LA's Areli Reyes grabbed Goalkeeper of the Year honors to close out the special awards.
Julia Pritchard once again proved to be one of the most consistent forces in the CCAA. She led one of the most dominant units in the CCAA en route to earning CCAA Defensive Player of the Year honors for a second time and All-CCAA honors for the third consecutive year. Sonoma State allowed just 0.82 goals per match and gave up one goal or less in 14 of 17 contests. Her goal against Cal State Monterey Bay was a game-winner. Pritchard also added two goals and four assists.
Lexi Zandonella-Arasa led the CCAA in nearly every offensive category as a sophomore. Her 13 goals were three more than second place, and she tied for the league lead in assists with nine (also three more than second place). The Concord native posted a hat-trick in the second game of the season, put together a six-game stretch in which she scored every match, and capped it off with a two-goal performance against Stanislaus State. She matched the CCAA record with a goal in six consecutive matches. Zandonella-Arasa also had six matches where she had both a goal and an assist. This is the second consecutive All-CCAA first team selection for Zandonella-Arasa, who finished the regular season ranked 11th in NCAA Division II with 2.06 points per game.
Annette Sotelo stepped into a starting role when she joined the Seawolves in summer workouts. In her second weekend of collegiate competition, the San Marcos native posted two goals against Academy of Art and registered the game-winner over nationally ranked Western Washington. Sotelo captured CCAA/Pixellot Offensive Player of the Week honors that week and gave the Seawolves their first CCAA Freshman of the Year since 2008. Sotelo finished the regular season with seven goals.
The successful season by the Warriors did not go unnoticed by the CCAA conference as they recognized the role Alexis Brewah and Sabrina Cabrera played in helping bring a regular-season co-championship to Turlock for the first time since 2013.
Alexis Brewah's name can be found on every leaderboard. The Stockton native earned CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors after ranking second in goals (10), tied for first in assists (9), and was second in points (29). She is tied for 15th in the country in assists and 24th in total points. On the second-to-last weekend of the regular season, with Stanislaus State needing wins against two teams in the hunt for the CCAA title, Brewah came through with a goal in a 2-1 win against Cal State and then assisted on all three goals against Cal Poly Pomona. The forward had points in 12 of 17 matches, and only once did she go two matches without posting a goal or an assist.
Sabrina Cabrera also joined the Warriors this season to provide Stanislaus State with one of the best-scoring duos in the conference. The 2022 CCAA Midfielder of the Year ranked fourth in the CCAA with seven goals and was second with four game-winning goals. The South Dos Palos native did not score in the opener but posted a goal in the next three matches, including game-winners over regional foes Biola and Fresno Pacific. Cabrera registered the only goal in the win over Cal State Monterey Bay and came off the bench to score two second-half goals in a critical win over Cal Poly Pomona late in the season.
Cal State LA's
Areli Reyes captured CCAA Defensive Player of the Week honors the first week of the season. She carried that momentum through the season to earn the Golden Eagles' first-ever CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year award. The sophomore from San Marcos led the CCAA and ranked third in NCAA Division II with 11 shutouts. She posted a .814 save percentage and.667 goals against average. During CCAA competition, Reyes posted a shutout streak of 390 consecutive minutes, and only once all season did she give up goals in back-to-back matches.
The CCAA Coach of the Year honor went to Sonoma's
Emiria Salzmann for the third time in her career. The 11th-year head coach led the Seawolves to its third consecutive CCAA championship, posting an 11-3-3 record and a 7-2-2 mark in CCAA play. Sonoma State earned a win over nationally ranked Western Washington (2-1) and tied Point Loma (1-1) on the road. The Seawolves put together two five-match unbeaten streaks throughout the year and never lost or tied in consecutive matches. They will carry a four-match undefeated run into the semifinals of the CCAA Tournament.
Brewah, Cabrera, and Reyes collected first team All-CCAA honors for the first time in their careers. Pritchard added repeated as a first team selection after earning second team honors as a sophomore. Zandonella-Arasa has now earned first team honors in both of her seasons of eligibility. Sotelo collected second team honors.
Sonoma State tied Chico State with four first or second team All-CCAA selections. Malia Falk was another repeat first team selection for the Seawolves. Nicole Fairbanks represented Chico State on the first team, while Emma Hofmann, Susanna Garcia and Brynn Howard all collected second team honors. All seven individual awards and the All-CCAA selections were solely voted on by the CCAA's 12 head coaches. Click here to see the complete 2022 All-CCAA Women's Soccer Team.
