For the third-straight season, Cal State San Marcos senior Jaime Jacob headlines the 2019-20 All-CCAA Womens’ Golf Team and award winners, announced today by the league office. Despite the shortened season, the team and all award recipients were voted on by the CCAA’s six head coaches.
Hailing from Encinitas, Jacob is the only woman to ever earn CCAA Player of the Year, as the sport became sanctioned by the conference prior to the 2017-18 season. Jacob has enjoyed a decorated career for the Cougars, winning back-to-back team and individual CCAA titles, and finishing as the NCAA individual champion in 2019. This year, Jacob yet again paced the league all season long, ranked fifth individually by Golfstat and the lone woman in the league to average under-par on the year. Playing in six events, she posted a 71.38 stroke per round average, landing in the top five finishers every time she took the course and recording three individual medalist victories.
Jacob is one of five women in the country to average sub-par golf throughout 2019-20. In March, she was also named to the Arnold Palmer Cup team, where 12 men and 12 women across the collegiate golf landscape were selected to play in a US vs. International Ryder-Cup style event. The event, originally scheduled for summer, has been postponed to December 2020.
Like Jacob, sweeping Coach of the Year honors for the last three seasons, Greg Hutton directed the Cougars to yet another impressive season. Coming off an NCAA runner-up finish in 2019, the team won five of the six tournaments in which they competed this season and claimed fourth in the Women’s Division II National Preview held in October.
Four Cal State San Marcos golfers find themselves on the All-CCAA Team as Claire Hogle, Breann Horn and Savannah Magallon join Jacob with distinction. Each is a repeat pick from a year ago, with Hogle and Magallon making their third All-CCAA team.
Also racking up acclaim and multiple awards are representatives from Sonoma State. First-year players Samantha Cabunag and Courtney Cervellin helped the Seawolves to a strong campaign as the team took two team victories and finished in runner-up position twice. Cabunag, a sophomore from Irvine who transferred to Sonoma State after a season at Southern Illinois, earned Newcomer of the Year. She earned individual medalist honors at the PLNU Invitational to open the spring and found her way to the top-10 in three events.
Hailing from Elk Grove, Freshman of the Year Cervellin was in the Seawolves’ lineup in all seven events. Cervellin marks back-to-back Freshman of the Year honors for Sonoma State as SMU transfer Megan DeLeo earned recognition in 2018-19.
Cabunag was joined on the All-CCAA team by senior Cristina Picariello, making her third appearance, and junior Lexi Neilsen as the duo combined for five top-10 individual finishes on the year for the Seawolves.
Each CCAA team is represented with All-Conference honorees, as Cal State East Bay’s Drishti Karumbaya again earned selection, joining the four Cougars and Picariello as repeat performers. Sophomores Isabel Carpenter of Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State LA’s Marie Dean complete the 10-member All-CCAA team. Dean, a transfer from Fresno State, is the Golden Eagles’ first All-Conference selection, with freshman Morgan Sjordsma earning honorable mention status. Otter Zoe Offield and Chico State’s Taylor Stewart round out the selections as both picked up honorable mention status.
While no postseason golf was played, including the CCAA Championships, Cal State San Marcos closed the spring in 12th in the final WGCA Coaches Poll, with Sonoma State receiving votes. The Cougars also paced the lone NCAA Division II West regional rankings of the spring, and the Seawolves stood in seventh in the region in the early listing.
