King, Tshiaba Claim Weekly Track & Field Honors

After impressive performances in Southern California, Chico State’s Eddie King and Porte-Joie Tshiaba of Cal State LA have earned CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week for April 15-21, respectively.

Already one of the great stories in Chico State’s distance-running lore, King can also boast one of the great performances. King clocked the sixth-fastest 5,000-meter effort in the program’s history, 14:06.79, at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday night in Torrance, turning in the fifth-best time in the nation in the 2019 season and a provisional qualifying mark. King, a senior from Morgan Hill, was the top finisher among 13 NCAA student-athletes in his section of the Mt. SAC Relays 5,000-Meter Invitational, including eight from the Division-I ranks. The remainder of the 23-man field was comprised of a bevy of international athletes.

Tshiaba competed twice over the weekend, winning a pair of high jump competitions. Thursday, he lept 6-11.50 at the Twilight Open in LA, and followed it up with a victorious effort at the Mt. SAC Relays. With a mark of 7-0.50, Tshiaba now owns the third-best jump in the country and an automatic qualifying mark. Also competing in the long jump, the freshman from Los Angeles picked up a seventh-place finish at the Twilight meet recording a distance of 22-4.50.

Cal State LA is back in action at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine on Saturday, while Chico State next takes to the track at the 2019 CCAA Track & Field Championships May 2-4 in La Jolla.
