Vallejos, Wampler Tapped for Weekly Softball Honors


A pair of underclassmen performances to keep their teams well into tournament contention have garnered UC San Diego’s Robyn Wampler and Brylynn Vallejos CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 18-24, respectively.

Wampler, a sophomore from Berkeley, led the No. 16 Tritons to a pair of critical victories over No. 4 Chico State on Sunday, moving the Tritons into first place in the CCAA standings. Wampler compiled a 1.31 ERA across 10.2 innings pitched while tallying 10 strikeouts and picking up saves in both of UC San Diego’s games in the rain-shortened series. Wampler outdueled her Chico State counterpart in game one, helping the Tritons to a 4-3 win, and came in for the final 2.2 innings of game two, holding off the Wildcats in a crucial situation to seal a 3-2 victory.

Last year’s CCAA Freshman of the Year has remained a force in the circle during her sophomore campaign, picking up her third weekly honor of the year, and the seventh of her young career in Blue and Gold.

Hailing from Reno, Vallejos was on fire for San Francisco State over the weekend, hitting .615 (8-13) with seven runs scored and three batted in while slugging .846 as the Gators took three-of-four against Cal State Dominguez Hills to land in sixth in the CCAA standings.

In the finale, the freshman hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season that broke the 1-1 tie as San Francisco State went on to run rule the Toros 12-2, in five innings. In the field, the center fielder made play after play for the Gators’ defense, including a diving catch in Game Two on Saturday, and Vallejos threw out a runner at the plate in Game Four to end the inning.

Both squads now head to Turlock to compete in the 18th Annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Stanislaus State. Each team is scheduled to play five games against West Region competition during a three-day span.
