Hlanguyo, Roybal Earn CCAA Weekly Honors

Amassing multiple event victories over the weekend, Cal State LA’s Shingirai Hlanguyo and Chico State’s Isaiah Roybal have earned CCAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week for March 18-24, respectively.

Hlanguyo, a sophomore sprinter from Mutare, Zimbabwe, was part of four Golden Eagles victories at the UC Riverside Spring Classic. Competing against primarily Division I competition, Hlanguyo raced to wins in the 100 (10.74 s), 200 (21.26), 4x100 relay (41.36) and 4x400 meter relay (3:17.39).

The 4x400 mark stands as a season best for Cal State LA, 12th-fastest in the country. His finish in the 200 meters was enough for a provisional qualifying mark and the 2nd-best in the West, trailing only the 2019 NCAA Indoor National Champion Mobolade Ajomale of Academy of Art.

Roybal, a senior from Santa Rosa, rang up his third long jump title in three tries this season—his first year competing in the event at the collegiate level. He leapt 7.29 meters at the Jamie Nieto Invitational to take the event win and notch a provisional qualifying mark. The mark currently stands in seventh nationally, more than a half a foot ahead of his closest CCAA competitors this season. Roybal also won his heat in the 200 meters, finishing fifth overall in a field of 34, and ran the third leg for the winning 4x400 meter relay team.

Cal State LA competes a pair of events hosted by UCLA this weekend, and Chico State travels to the Bay Area to enter the fields at the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic.
