Dominique Walker, Alanna Phillips Secure Season's First Weekly Awards


After a successful weekend at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas to open the year, Cal State San Bernardino’s Dominique Walker and Alanna Phillips of UC San Diego have earned the season’s first CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week award, for Jan. 28-Feb. 3.

Walker, a senior catcher from Santa Fe Springs, helped power Cal State San Bernardino to the tournament title after the Coyotes earned three wins all while outscoring their opponents 34-5 to start the season. She finished the weekend with nine hits in 12 trips to the plate, batting in eight and hitting four doubles. Walker’s consistent performance led to a 1.083 slugging percentage and helped her to All-Tournament Team honors for her efforts.

Phillips, a junior from Utica, NY, went a perfect 2-0 on the week, helping No. 23 UC San Diego to victories over Concordia (Ore.) and University of Mary. Phillips pitched two complete games, recording nine strikeouts during her efforts in 10 innings of work. The only runs she surrendered across the 37 batters she faced came off of a pair of home runs as the Tritons outscored their opponents 21-4 in Phillips’ two 5-inning complete game appearances..

Both squads open conference play this weekend, as Cal State San Bernardino travels to Cal State San Marcos for four. Meanwhile, UC San Diego will play host to Cal State Dominguez Hills in La Jolla in the Friday/Saturday series.
