Fukushima, Wampler Capture Player and Pitcher of the Week Honors

After stymying opponents on both sides of the plate, Cal State East Bay’s Sarah Fukushima and UC San Diego’s Robyn Wampler have been named CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 4-10, respectively.

Fukushima, a junior from Sacramento, was nearly impossible for opposing pitchers to get out this weekend at the 14-team Dixie State Classic. In five games from St. George, Fukushima went 12-for-16 and racked up 21 total bases, hitting .750 with a 1.313 slugging percentage.

The junior infielder for the Pioneers had four multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 performance against Chadron State and a 4-for-4 effort against Central Washington. She belted two home runs, hit three doubles, drew two walks, scored five runs and tallied eight RBI for the weekend. Twice named CCAA Player of the Week in 2017, this is Fukushima’s third weekly conference honor.

Wampler picked up a pair of complete-game wins and a save in her three appearances against Cal State Dominguez Hills this week leading the No. 23 Tritons to three victories over the Toros. The sophomore from Berkeley showed her control, surrendering just two walks while striking out eight.

Across 16 innings, Wampler only allowed one earned run and gave up just one extra base hit in the three games in which she pitched. She is currently pacing the CCAA with a 0.39 ERA and holding opponents to a league-best .161 batting average in the early goings of the season. This is Wampler’s fifth CCAA Pitcher of the Week award.

This week, the Tritons play a pair of non-conference contests against Azusa Pacific on Wednesday before hosting Cal State Monterey Bay for four to cap a 10-game homestand. The Pioneers take to the field for their first CCAA action this weekend, traveling to Cal State San Bernardino for doubleheaders on the docket for Friday and Saturday.
