Pioneers and Toros advance to regional semifinals

#1 Cal State East Bay 83, #8 Cal Poly Humboldt 64 [Box score]
No. 1 seed Cal State East Bay pulled away in the second half to defeat No. 8 seed Cal Poly Humboldt, 81–64, in front of a crowd of 1,528 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.
 
The Pioneers, who are the last remaining undefeated team in NCAA Basketball at 31-0, led by just three at the break before erupting for 49 second-half points to pull away from the Lumberjacks.
 
Tyree Campbell led Cal State East Bay with 18 points. He went 7-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc, while posting three steals. Josh Ijeh added 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Terence Haywood scored 11 off the bench, and the Pioneers got nine points from Ramsey Huff. Jaayden Bush had eight points to go along with his game-high seven assists. Cal State East Bay finished with 25 assists on 32 field goals and forced 22 Humboldt turnovers (CSUEB 12 turnovers).
 
The Pioneers dominated the paint, outscoring Humboldt 46-28 inside, and also held advantages in fast-break points (14-4), second-chance points (17-2), and bench scoring (28-7). CSUSB shot .542 percent overall and .467 percent from 3-point range (7-of-15), including .625 percent (5-of-8) in the second half.
 
Drew Ardouin led Humboldt with 17 points. Shakir Odunewu added 13, and Rob Jenkins scored 11. The Lumberjacks shot a solid .913 percent at the free-throw line, making 21-of-23, but could not keep pace once CSUEB found its rhythm in the second half.
 
Cal Poly Humboldt hung tough early and even built a 10-point lead in the first half (19-9), but East Bay answered with its depth, pressure, and interior scoring. Ten Pioneers scored at least three points in the game, and 11 played seven or more minutes.
 
Cal State East Bay will advance to the regional semifinals, where it will face the No. 5 seed, Cal State Dominguez Hills, on Friday, Mar. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

#5 Cal State Dominguez Hills 69, #4 Alaska Anchorage 58 [Box score]
The defending regional champions, Cal State Dominguez Hills, outscored Alaska Anchorage 18-5 in the final four minutes to earn a 69–58 win in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II West Regional.
 
The Toros (23–8) controlled much of the game, leading for more than 32 minutes and building a double-digit advantage in the second half. But the Seawolves continued to chip away and went on an 8-0 run midway through the second half to go up by five points (48-43) with eight minutes remaining.
 
Dasean Stevens would lead CSUDH on a run to retake the lead as he scored six of the Toros' next 11 points to turn the five-point deficit into a one-point lead (54-53). Luke Lin followed with a jumper, and the Toros would not look back. CSUDH made all nine of its free throws in the final two minutes to seal the game.
 
Stevens led four Toros in double-figures with 16 points. Luke Lin went 5-of-7 from the field and at the free line to score 15 points while grabbing six rebounds. Jalen Brown added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Josiah Sanders had 13 points to go with eight rebounds. David Cheatom also chipped in with nine points as the Toros' starters accounted for 65 of their 69 points.
 
Sylas Williams led Alaska Anchorage with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hasaan Herrington added 14 points, and Akok Machar had nine.
 
The Toros forced the Seawolves into 14 turnovers and converted those opportunities into a 16–0 advantage in fast-break points. They also controlled the interior, outscoring Alaska Anchorage 32–18 in the paint.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills will advance to the semifinals, where it will face the top-seed and CCAA foe, Cal State East Bay, on Saturday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m.
