POMONA, Calif. - No. 2 seed Cal State LA scored on two penalty kicks in the second half to defeat No. 3 seed Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2, and advance to the championship match of the CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, presented by FloCollege, for the first time since 2022.
After trailing 2-1 at halftime, the Golden Eagles tied it in the 57th minute on a penalty kick from
Celine Gehrig. It came right after her teammate was taken down in the box after a corner kick.
The go-ahead goal came in the 77th minute and was provided by the CCAA Freshman of the Year
Briana Chagolla. Her teammate
Lizbet Saligan drew the foul in the box with a strong run on the right side. She was pulled down while making her move, giving the Golden Eagles their second penalty kick of the half and just their third of the season. Chagolla delivered a strong shot into the low left side of the goal as the keeper went the other direction.
The Coyotes tried to equalize after falling behind for the first time in the match, but could not break through the stingy Golden Eagles' defense. CSUSB had just one shot in the last 13 minutes and was outshot 11-7, including 7-2 on shots on goal.
Cal State LA will advance to the CCAA Tournament Championship on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. It will face the No. 4 seed, UC Merced. The two teams tied 1-1 in their only meeting of the season (Sept. 27).
