CCAA coaches select Cal Poly Pomona as the favorites in the 2025 Women's Soccer Preseason Poll

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - Defending NCAA National Champions, Cal Poly Pomona, were voted the favorites in the 2025 CCAA Women's Soccer Preseason Poll. Still, the coaches around the conference are not expecting the Broncos to have an easy time repeating, as three other teams received first-place votes.

Cal Poly Pomona earned 141 points and nine of the 12 first-place votes. Cal State East Bay finished second with 118 points. Cal State LA and Stanislaus State tied for third with 110 points, and one first-place vote apiece.

The remaining first-place vote went to Cal State San Marcos (84 points), which won a close vote for fifth place over Cal Poly Humboldt (83) and Cal State Monterey Bay (81). Cal State San Bernardino edged out Cal State Dominguez Hills by one point (56-55) to be voted eighth. Chico State (49), UC Merced (28), and San Francisco State (21) rounded out the last three spots on the list.

Cal Poly Pomona went 21-1-2 last season (8-1-2 CCAA) on its run to the program's first national championship. The Broncos defeated the nation's No. 1-ranked team and the previous two national champions to claim the title. Their only blemishes all season came in CCAA play as the conference challenged CPP throughout the regular season and in the conference tournament. Four all-conference selections will return this season, including the 2024 CCAA Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year Vanessa Cruz. The Broncos will first and second team selections Liberty Ortiz (D), Angelina Rivas (F), and Marisa Salazar (MF).
 
Cal State East Bay was picked to finish second after going 11-6-3 last season and reaching the CCAA Tournament finals. The Pioneers were as good as any team down the stretch last season, as they earned points in their final eight matches (5-0-3) to reach the tournament championship match. A quartet of All-CCAA seniors return to lead CSUEB. Abigail Kern and Morgan Pearson are back at the forward positions, and Mika Sayfurahman returns in the midfield. Jaeden Nelson will help anchor the backline.
 
Stanislaus State went 10-8-2 last season (6-5-0 CCAA), including earning a first-round win in the CCAA Tournament. The Warriors were the only team to defeat Cal Poly Pomona (2-0) last season, and it helped propel them to their fifth consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance. CCAA Midfielder of the Year Aliah Avila returns for her junior season. She helps lead an offense that ranked second in the CCAA in scoring offense (1.55) and points per game (4.3).
 
Cal State LA made its 11th consecutive appearance in the CCAA Tournament last season. The Golden Eagles placed third in the standings with 19 points after going 9-4-5 on the season and 6-4-1 in conference play. All four first or second-team All-CCAA selections graduated from a team that was one of the top defensive teams in the conference and the nation. CSLA ranked 20th nationally in goals against average (.604) and 11th in save percentage (.869).
 
Two years after winning the CCAA Tournament Championship, Cal State San Marcos hopes to hoist another CCAA trophy this season. The Cougars will bring back an experienced group, including 2024 All-CCAA selection Danielle Paulson and the 2023 CCAA Player of the Year Natalie Paulson.
 
Cal Poly Humboldt has made the CCAA Tournament each of the past three seasons as the No. 5 seed. Last year, the Lumberjacks (8-8-3, 5-4-2 CCAA) tied Cal State Monterey Bay for fifth place with 17 points. They will bring back two decorated student-athletes at the forward position. All-CCAA selection Frida Duran Arellano returns for her senior season, and the 2024 CCAA Freshman of the Year, Heidie Munoz, comes back for her sophomore season.
 
Cal State Monterey Bay will host the 2025 CCAA Soccer Tournament presented by FloCollege (Nov. 14-16). Last season, the Otters won two of their final three matches to earn the final spot before upsetting the No. 3 seed in the first round of the CCAA Tournament. CSUMB went 4-2-5 in conference play last season, and was 24th in NCAA Division II with a .624 goals against average. All-conference midfielder Danielle Castro also returns for the Otters.
 
Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills were picked eighth and ninth, respectively, with one all-conference selection returning. Kaila Tone returns for the Toros, and Bella Cervantes returns for the Coyotes.
 
Chico State (49), UC Merced (28), and San Francisco State (21) rounded out the last three spots on the list.
