Michael Payan of Cal Poly Humboldt is this week’s FloCollege/CCAA Field Athlete of the Week after soaring to a new school record.

Payan broke a 23-year old program record in the pole vault as he cleared 5.17 meters — 16 feet 11.5 inches — at Cal’s Brutus Hamilton meet on Saturday. The freshman from Rocklin had previously met the provisional qualifying standard and improved on the mark by 3-and-a-half inches. Payan, the CCAA leader, now ranks No. 4 in NCAA Division II.

Payan set a new Cal Poly Humboldt record, surpassing the previous top mark of 16 feet, 8.75 inches by Justin Miller in 2002.

This is Payan’ first career Field Athlete of the Week award. Click here to see the complete list of CCAA Track & Field weekly award winners.
