Toros' Nala Williams Leads the 2024-25 All-CCAA Women's Basketball Season Awards

Mar 4, 2025

The conference coaches have voted Cal State Dominguez Hills' Nala Williams as both CCAA Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, and the Toros' John Bonner was selected Coach of the Year, highlighting the 2024-25 All-CCAA women's basketball awards.  Newcomer of the Year honors went to Sonoma State's Alysa Lopez, and Cal State Dominguez Hills' Cristina Jones was voted the Freshman of the Year.

Nala Williams was a driving factor on both ends of the floor as Cal State Dominguez Hills closed out the regular season tied for the most wins (29) and fewest losses (1) in NCAA Division II. The junior guard led the conference in scoring (17.9 points per game) and the nation in steals (125 total). She scored 20 or more points 13 times, including in 10 of 22 conference games. She is shooting .459 percent from the field (seventh CCAA) and ranks 15th in NCAA Div. II with a .400 shooting percent from 3-point range.

The Long Beach native also posted at least two steals in all but one game, and she had two games with a CCAA season-best eight steals. Williams is the second Toro in the last three years to be named CCAA Player of the Year and CCAA Defensive Player of the Year in the same season (Dawnyel Lair, 2022-23).

In her first season as a Seawolf, Alysa Lopez averaged 13.5 points per game, shooting .414 percent from the field with 4.0 rebounds per game. The transfer from Folsom Lake CC scored 20 or more points in six games, including a season-best 24 points on two occasions. She is the first Sonoma State student-athlete named Newcomer of the Year since Aly Hennington in 2010-11.

Cristina Jones started 18 conference games during her freshman season for the 29-1 Toros. She averaged 8.0 ppg, including 9.3 ppg in conference games. The 5-10 forward shot .476 percent from the field and grabbed 5.6 rebounds per game. She ranked third in the CCAA in offensive rebounds (3.27). Jones is the fourth Toro to win CCAA Freshman of the Year honors. She joins Nala Williams (2022-23), Brigayle Igelhart (2006-07) and Tameka Blue (2002-03).

John Bonner was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second time in the past three seasons. He led the Toros to a school-record 27 consecutive wins to open the year. They reached No. 2 in the national rankings and were the last undefeated team in NCAA Div. II. Bonner guided the program to its sixth CCAA regular season championship with a 21-1 conference record, his second overall. CSUDH finished the regular season leading the CCAA and ranked top 10 nationally in steals (fifth, 16.4), turnover margin (third, 10.8), turnovers forced per game (sixth, 26.6), assists per game (seventh, 17.9), and scoring offense (ninth, 80.0 ppg).

Joining Williams on the all-conference first team were CSUDH's Asia Jordan and Cal State LA's Lily Buggs, who each collected first team honors for the fourth time in their decorated careers. Williams repeated as a first team selection from last season, along with Kalaya Buggs (Cal Poly Pomona).

Jordan Allred (Chico State), Makenzi Laporte (Chico State), and Sydney Nelson (Cal Poly Pomona) all moved up to the first team after capturing second-team honors last season. Chico State's Meadow Aragon and Cal State San Bernardino's Lauryn Morris and Jaida Jackson completed the 10-person first team.

The 2024-25 CCAA Basketball Tournament begins Thursday, Mar. 6, in San Marcos. No. 3 seed Chico State will take on No. 6 seed Cal State LA in the first women's game of the day at 5:30 p.m. The 4/5 matchup will follow at 8 p.m. when Cal State San Bernardino faces Sonoma State.
