With three solid outings, Samantha Vargas of Cal State San Bernardino was selected as the FloCollege/CCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week, for the week of March 3-9.
Vargas picked up a win and a save in three appearances, helping the Coyotes to both wins in the four-game series split at home against Stanislaus State. In 15 innings of work, Vargas allowed three earned runs (all in one game) with five strikeouts for a 1.40 ERA. She gave up 13 hits and walked five while improving her personal record to 6-3.
The senior southpaw from Grand Terrace, Calif., began the series with a six-inning effort, yielding three unearned runs on six hits in the 7-4 win over the Warriors. In Saturday’s start, she kept the Coyotes in the close game in the seven-inning complete game before CSUSB’s seventh inning rally fell short in a 3-2 decision. Vargas earned a two-inning save in the series finale, preserving a series split by ending the game with a double-play grounder with two runners on base.
Vargas is second in the conference with 73.2 innings pitched. She ranks sixth in strikeouts (37) and her six wins is just two shy of the CCAA leader. Click here to see the CCAA stats leaderboard.
This is Vargas’s first career CCAA pitcher of the week award. It is also Cal State San Bernardino’s first pitcher of the week winner since April 29, 2019 (Kendra O’Cul). Click here to see the complete list of CCAA Softball weekly award winners.
