Top Seeds Lead the Way on Day One of West Regional

The top four seeds earned wins on the first day of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball West Regional, hosted by Azusa Pacific. Despite qualifying four teams into the eight-team field, the CCAA has just one remaining as Cal State San Marcos advanced to the semifinal round and will take on Western Washington on Saturday evening.

#3 Western Washington 66, #6 Cal Poly Pomona 61 - Box Score

After falling behind after the first quarter, the sixth-seeded Broncos stormed back in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings 19-18 to pull within six points at the break, 36-30. The Broncos kept the momentum going into the second half, opening up the third quarter on an 11-3 run to take the lead. Unfortunately for CPP, the Vikings righted their ship in the fourth quarter, winning the final frame, 16-12, to advance to the West Region semifinals on Saturday evening.

CPP was led by 17 points from Kalaya Buggs, who added five assists, five steals and five rebounds. Jeanette Fine brought down eight rebounds to lead the Broncos before fouling out. Western Washington was led by 22 points from Brooke Walling and 16 more from Aspen Garrison

#2 Cal State San Marcos 82, #7 Point Loma 61 - Box Score

The Cougars built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back as second-seeded Cal State San Marcos cruised to a 82-61 win over Point Loma to open NCAA Regional play on Friday at Azusa Pacific.

Newly-minted West Region Player of the Year Jordan Vasquez led the Cougars on both ends of the floor, scoring 30 points and bringing down 12 rebounds to collect the double-double. CSUSM was efficient all game, shooting 52.54% from the field and 86.67% on free throws.

With the win, the Cougars will take on Western Washington in the first of two semifinal games scheduled for Saturday evening in Azusa.

#1 Azusa Pacific 66, #8 Cal State LA 60 - Box Score

Eighth-seed Cal State LA gave top-seed Azusa Pacific all they could handle but after four quarters, the Golden Eagles fell 66-60 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional.

Cal State LA was led by 11 points and 11 rebounds from guard Lily Buggs. Azusa Pacific was led by 22 points from Amayah Kirkman.

#4 Montana State Billings 86, #5 Chico State 55 - Box Score

Montana State Billings seemingly couldn't miss, shooting 53.3% from the field and 42.3% from behind the arc to earn an 86-55 win over the Chico State Wildcats.

Chico State was led by 10 points from Zhane Duckett, who also added five assists in the losing effort. Kola Bad Bear led the way for MSUB, scoring 18 points in the win.
