Cal State Monterey Bay’s Mackenzie Willis was dominant in the circle over the weekend, earning her the CCAA Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 19-25.
Willis struck out 21 batters in 15 2/3 innings of work and allowed just three hits in four appearances to lead the Otters to a 3-1 series win over San Francisco State. She now leads all of NCAA with 85 strikeouts this season.
The freshman from Gardnerville, Nev., opened the series on Saturday with 11 strikeouts in 5 2/3 no-hit innings in the team’s 5-4 win. Willis started the game by striking out the side and at another point in the game she fanned five consecutive batters. In her start on Sunday, Willis pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for her fifth win of the season. SF State’s second hit didn’t come until with two outs in the seventh while Willis retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced for the victory.
Willis leads the CCAA with 85 strikeouts, 47 more than the next pitcher.
