The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer coaches have made their selections for the 2024 All-CCAA team and individual honors.
Cal State Dominguez Hills’
Mikey McKibbin led the way as the CCAA Forward of the Year and the overall CCAA Player of the Year. Cal State LA’s
Andrew Portis was selected as the Defender of the Year, and Cal State San Bernardino’s
Brian Castillo was named the Midfielder of the Year. Goalkeeper of the Year honors went to Chico State’s
Emanuel Padilla for the second consecutive season.
Hunter George from CSUSB received Newcomer of the Year honors, and CSUDH’s
Gavin Brummer collected CCAA Freshman of the Year. Cal Poly Pomona’s
Matt O’Sullivan was voted CCAA Coach of the Year.
Mikey McKibbin put together one of the best offensive seasons in the country in 2024. He led the CCAA and ranked in the top 5 nationally in goals (14) and points (35). The senior forward was also the conference leader in assists (eight), and he helped CSUDH pace the CCAA in nearly every offensive category. McKibbin was also instrumental in the Toros’ turning around a 3-4-0 start to the year as they went unbeaten in conference (6-0-5) to earn a share of the CCAA Championship. The team was 6-1-1 in matches where McKibbin scored, including 5-0-0 in matches where he had two or more goals. McKibbin also had a hat-trick in the third match of the season against Seattle Pacific.
Andrew Portis’ selection as the CCAA Defender of the Year comes as no doubt as the three-time All-CCAA selection anchored one of the stoutest backlines in the West Region. Cal State LA allows just 0.88 goals per game (third CCAA) and has the fourth-best save percentage (.771). Portis also stepped up for the Golden Eagles on the offensive end, delivering four game-winning goals and three assists.
Brian Castillo put together a fantastic senior season en route to being voted the CCAA Midfielder of the Year. After scoring five goals as a junior, Castillo recorded 11 goals during his senior campaign to rank third in the CCAA in goals and points (22). CSUSB was undefeated (4-0-5) in the nine matches where Castillo scored.
Chico State’s
Emanuel Padilla is the lone repeat individual award winner. The senior from Santa Rosa earned back-to-back CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year honors, becoming just the second student-athlete to achieve this feat in consecutive seasons. Padilla led the CCAA and ranked fourth in the NCAA Div. II in minutes played (1691:08). He was also ranked second in the conference in goals against average (.851), save percentage (.792), and shutouts (six).
Hunter George becomes the first Coyote to win CCAA Newcomer of the Year honors since the award was implemented in 2006. The transfer from the University of Maryland scored three goals and dished out two assists in 13 matches. He ranked in the conference’s top 10 for shots per game and was instrumental in opportunities on offense for his teammates.
Cal State Dominguez Hills’
Gavin Brummer burst into the CCAA scene on his first collegiate weekend, and he has continued to be an impact performer for the Toros on their way to the 2024 CCAA regular season title. The Temecula native scored two goals in his first match, had an assist in his second, and notched another goal in his third. The forward finished the season with five goals and an assist.
Cal Poly Pomona’s
Matt O’Sullivan was tabbed by his peers as the CCAA Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year. The fifth-year head coach guided the Broncos to the program’s first CCAA regular season championship since 2018 and a first-round bye in the upcoming CCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament presented by FloCollege. CPP dropped its second match of the season and has not lost since. They climbed as high as No. 7 in the national rankings and went undefeated at Kellogg Stadium (8-0-2). The Broncos are 11-1-6 and enter the tournament on a 16-match unbeaten streak.
In addition to their individual honors, Portis, Padilla, Castillo, and McKibbin each earned a first-team All-CCAA selection. They were joined on the first team by Chico State’s
Preston Moll (D) and
Miles Rice (F), Cal State Monterey Bay’s
Hugo Vargas-Rios (MF) and
Mason Ward (F), Cal Poly Pomona’s
Fin Jackson (D) and
Max Laguna (MF).
Ryan Meinardus (MF) represented Cal State San Marcos as the 11th member of the first team.
Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal Poly Pomona led the CCAA with five first or second-team All-CCAA selections.
Jack Blickenstaff (GK),
Janos Kommerling (MF), and Alexis Sanchez (D) earned second-team honors for the Otters, joining first-team selections Ward and Vargas-Rios. The Broncos placed Laguna and Jackson on the first team. They were joined by second-team selections Woody Angell (F), Mads Frederiksen (MF), and
Jasper Winslow (D). All three of Chico’s All-CCAA selections earned first-team honors.
The all-conference awards are announced on the brink of the CCAA Men's Soccer Tournament semifinals presented by FloCollege. The first round was held last Sunday, and the winners advanced to the final site in Hayward. The semifinal games will start Friday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m., when No. 2 seed Cal Poly Pomona faces the No. 6 seed Cal State East Bay. Follow along with the competition at
