Broncos' Madrassi secures All-American honors at NCAAs; many others run in prelims

Cal Poly Pomona's Matteo Madrassi grabbed the first All-American honor for a CCAA student-athlete at the 2023 NCAA Track & Field Championships. The junior cleared 17-2.75 (5.25) on his first attempt at the height to place fourth and earn All-American honors for the second consecutive season.
 
His performance was just one of many strong marks for CCAA institutions on the first day of the Championships, which featured many prelim races.
 
The Cal Poly Pomona women's 4x100m relay team of Jaelyn Thomas, Kelsey Ehinlaiye, Yuna Queniat, Ayana Fields qualified for the finals after placing seventh with a time of 45.15. Fields also qualified in the 400m after placing fifth (53.27).
 
Chico State's Marissa D'Atri placed ninth in the 3k steeplechase (10:52.11) to earn a spot in Friday's final.
 
On the men's side, Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika will be running in the 400m finals after placing sixth in qualifying with a time of 46.41. Cal Poly Pomona's Ryan Fields took sixth in the 400m hurdles (50.99).
 
In the 10k final, Sonoma State's Gianna Bomarito placed 15th (36.11.36) and Chico State's Hannah Tiffany finished 21st (37.47.93).
